On Thursday, September 14, 2023, we will unveil our groundbreaking TUnIS.pipelight system, ringing in a new era in microtunneling.
This milestone will be presented at two simultaneous events:
- At the Project Dialogue in Ettlingen, Germany, our annual gathering and established platform for the German-speaking microtunnelling community, Jürgen Göckel will provide an in-depth exploration of the system’s features and advantages.
- Across the globe, at No-Dig Down Under in Brisbane, Mathew Jarvis, the Director of our Australian subsidiary, will deliver a keynote speech on “Control, Survey, and Automation for Complex Microtunnelling.”.

On July 23, TBM Jill completed the northbound tunnel of the new 1.4 km twin-bore road tunnel Silvertown under the River Thames in East London. Our warmest congratulations to the contractor Riverlinx CJV!
When a tunnel boring machine breaks through, a lot of rock and earth falls down. At the same time, stones fall from the hearts of those involved.
For us at VMT, the main challenge was the big TBM in a relatively small starting shaft. We are proud of the great work by the surveyors measuring the starting position of the TBM and of all VMT equipment having worked reliably during the project:
- Guidance system with TUnIS.moving station
- RCMS (Ring Convergence Measurement System)
- Segment production management with SDS onsite and LIS services during production
Further, the contractor used a special ring design with left and right tapering. It was not allowed to put the key stone between 90° – 270°. To meet this requirement, the team mastered the starting situation with the flying launch to bring the ‘big girl’ on track.
The ‘big girl’ we are talking about is Jill.
Just like its namesake, Jill Viner, the huge TBM is an innovator. While Jill Viner became the first female bus driver in London in 1974, EPB Shield Jill is the biggest TBM to be turned so far.
Why was it necessary to turn a machine weighing 2,300 tons by 180°?
“The U-turn manoeuvres were part of Riverlinx CJV’s original tender,” explained CJV Riverlinx project manager Ivor Thomas in an interview with the Tunnelling Journal The aim was to get the job done as quickly as possible, as there will be no return on investment until vehicles start to drive through the tunnel.
If you have ever tried to drive through the Blackwall tunnel at rush hour, you will understand why a second tunnel is needed.
Besides the reduction of delays and queues in the old Blackwall Tunnel, the new connection reduces the environmental impact of traffic congestion on some of London’s most polluted roads.
Having participated in 𝟭𝟳 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘀 during the last 10 years, Abhishek Kumar is going to support our customers in India, where we are currently involved in more than 20 TBM projects throughout the country.
Facing a rapid market growth of tunnel and infrastructure projects in the world’s most populous country, we enlarge our local VMT team in order to
- keep our quality at the usual VMT level,
- guarantee the best possible service to our customers and projects,
- maintain our fast response time.
Who could support VMT in India better than a local expert with vast experience in the field of tunnel surveying who had worked in different countries with international teams? With this perfectly matching background, Abhishek Kumar has recently started his new job.

Following these words of Benjamin Franklin, Abhishek is instructed by Sandeep Sharma, our regional VMT Sales Manager, together with one of our longest-serving employees: VMT legend Peter Blaesi. Feeling at home in the Indian tunnel sector and knowing even the smallest detail of our equipment, Peter will share his experience and knowledge gained from 27 years with VMT.
Right now, however, commissioning of our navigation system for 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗵𝗶 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝟰 is on Abhishek’s and Sandeep’s agenda. We are happy to have these great guys in India and wish them all the best over there.
